Joseph, Isreal, Moses and Ramses

Thursday, April 19th, 2007

Oh what a list of names! The last time I actually discussed history on this blog, we were speaking of Joseph, how he was sold into Egyptian slavery, and how the Israelites came to settle in Egypt. This occurred around 1700BC.

For points of reference, lets talk about a couple of the Egyptian Pharaohs. (Egyptians are descendants of Noah’s son Ham, by the way.) The first one we know the name of is Menes. He united upper and lower Egypt and reigned around 3100 BC. Cheops, who we associate with the Sphinx, reigned around 2900BC.

Around 1300BC, the Israelites left Egypt, led by Moses. There is some debate over who was Pharaoh at that time. One possibility is Akhenaten. He was married to Nefertiti and tried to persuade the Egyptians that there was only one God, as opposed to the multiple gods that they worshiped. He reigned from 1378 to1362 BC. Most people, however, believe that Pharaoh was Ramses the Great who reigned from 1304 to 1237.

We’ll leave Egypt and the Israelites now, and find out about what was going on in other areas. I’ll see you soon in Babylon!

Admission

Monday, April 16th, 2007

I need to admit here that I am struggling. I am finding it very difficult to sit down and do the reading necessary to keep the blog moving. That was part of the reason I started the blog in the first place–to force myself to set aside time to read in this subject that fascinates me. One thing I think I am going to do is change the book. I’ll still read The Book of God, but it does not move fast enough to keep the blog interesting. I need a book that I can read about 15 minutes of, and then have something to talk about, like I could with Adam and His Kin. I have several of them here, and that’s about the amount of time that I think I can devote to reading on a regular basis. It’s time to either get a good schedule going here, or drop it. I’m not willing to drop it. So. We’ll just have to bounce around books a little bit. As I write this it is late Monday night. I’ll be back Wednesday with some firm ideas and perhaps a (hi)story for you.

Noah

Thursday, April 12th, 2007

No, I don’t have anything new to tell you about Noah, but I have surely felt like I was enduring 40 days and 40 nights of rain! In fact, I went to my door yesterday, opened it, and started calling the animals to see if they would line up 2 by 2 to get in. Unfortunately, all that water was IN my house, and so I have been very busy mopping and bailing. The tide has been stemmed, and I did read a bit last night. When I left off last night, Moses had begun to talk to Pharaoh.

I do enjoy this book, but it is a long read, and it does not move very fast. I still heartily recommend it for the sense of realness it gives to people we tend to think of as “Bible characters”. They weren’t characters. They were real people just like us, and this book helps show that. The cultural information is also great. So, let’s just keep reading, and I’ll try to start adding in some info from other sources to go with this book. Perhaps some information on the Pharaohs of this era???

My apologies. Again.

Wednesday, April 4th, 2007

I am so sorry ya’ll. I could stretch the truth and say that I’m waiting on Suni to get her book, but the absolute truth is that I just have not made the time to do any reading for several days. I will get it done. I will. I’ve wrapped up the project that was eating me so bad, and I will be back Monday, and we will move ahead on this book. Frealz!
